ABOUT

STEPHEN T. MAING - DIRECTOR, EDITOR, CINEMATOGRAPHER

Stephen Maing is a Korean-American filmmaker and sometimes musician based in New York. His documentary and narrative work focuses on unexpected and at times unusual characters confronting both personal and cultural dilemas. Stephen is currently directing the ITVS documentary HIGH TECH, LOW LIFE (working title), which follows the efforts of two roving independent citizen reporters as they travel the country documenting under-reported news stories and events in China. His most recent film work on LIONESS, which he co-produced and edited, tells the story of America's first group of female support soldiers to be sent into combat during the Iraq war. In March 2009, Lioness was presented on Capitol Hill to members of Congress where women from the film were asked to talk about their experiences in Iraq. During 2000 to 2004, Stephen worked as editor and contributing cinematographer at Northern Light Productions on numerous projects ranging in subject from civil rights to urban sprawl. In 2001, Stephen received a LEF-Foundation grant to direct LITTLE HEARTS a short film about the brief and at times awkward relatioship dynamics of three young children. LITTLE HEARTS was awarded Best of Festival at the 2003 New England Film and Video Festival as well as the Audience Award for Best Short Film at the Slamdance Film Festival. The film's intimate documentary style was partly inspired by his students' work while teaching at youth media programs like the Boston Film/Video Foundation's Young Producers Program.

Stephen is a MacArthur Foundation and Sundance Documentary Institute fellow and graduate of Boston Univerisity's Dual-Degree Program with a B.S. in Film Production and B.A. in Art History/Architectural Studies. His upcoming film, HIGH TECH, LOW LIFE, which received a Creative Promise Award Honorable Mention at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival was filmed on location in China, Germany, Romania and Hong Kong. In his spare time Stephen enjoys building things, skateboarding and admiring small animals.
